Taking a thoughtful approach to design

A Full Service San Francisco Interior Design & Interior Architecture Firm

“I love being able to help people feel invigorated in their surroundings. By taking a thoughtful approach to design, I work to enrich the spaces in which my clients live and work, reflecting their passions and telling personal stories through the design of each space.

With each project comes an opportunity to make someone's life better by enlightening them through design, and also to show them how to think about their space differently - how to gently challenge their comfort zone, and how that can foster inspiration, fun, health, and happiness long after the project is complete.”

-Margo Nathanson, Principal Designer

Growing up in the New York city area and spending a decade in Washington DC, then moving to the Bay Area has enriched Margo’s love and knowledge of design, art, and architecture. Living in California, with its varied landscapes, cultures and perspectives, also inspires her designs. Coming from an art and design background has given Margo a deep understanding of color, material, texture, and form, which she allows to intuitively drive the design. The end result creates balance, harmony and beauty. She has a Certification in Interior Design and Interior Architecture from UC Berkeley and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture from the Corcoran School of Art and Design.

“We were at the beginning of construction for a major remodel and 900+ square foot addition to our craftsman home when my wife and I realized that suddenly we had to come up with all the interior fixtures and finishes fast - we had spent so long working with our architect on the design and permitting process that it never occurred to us that we had to do this. Yes we were total newbies to the process. After researching several designers we met with Margo and clicked with her right away- she just really seemed to get us and understand what we wanted. She ended up doing top to bottom designs for four bedrooms with walk-in closets , a dining room and pantry, our living room, a family/runpus room, and three bathrooms. She held our hands as she walked us through the whole process, from plumbing and electrical design needs to furniture and final paint colors. Margo was amazing through this all, contending with our sometimes conflicting demands and our total naivety to the process. We are thrilled with the end result and highly recommend Margo to anyone else who has any design needs. She has a great eye, a distinct sense of style, a great sense of what people are looking for and is a great person on top of all that. We continue to rely on her for house advice and consider her a friend whom we hope to stay in touch with for a long time.”

“I work as a construction project manager for a Lake Tahoe based general contractor specializing in high end custom homes. I had the pleasure of working with Margo Nathanson Interiors on 2 modern homes. Nobody really cares what a builder thinks about aesthetics, so I’ll instead describe my experience working with MNI from a contractor’s perspective. I’ll begin by saying that, when an affluent client hires a designer, it typically results in a nightmare experience for the builder (full tearout of newly installed finishes, unclear/constantly changing specifications, plan alterations that are not depicted in drawings, opinions about how something should be constructed yet have never held a hammer, confusion regarding hierarchy in the decision-making process, the stories are endless). These then translate to timeline extensions, budget increases, and ultimately, client dissatisfaction with the builder. We almost need a person employed specifically for the purpose of managing the designer; it takes that much time and energy! Working with MNI was the complete opposite, a breath of fresh air. Here are some of my experiences: The first time I saw Margo was in an interaction with the client. She was professional, confident, thoughtful, and collaborative. I immediately thought, this person puts the client first - before ego, before money - Rare. Margo did not take sides between the client and builder. Things happen as the sausage is being made. Tensions can get high and it isn’t irregular for the owner and designer to form a clique of negativity towards the builder. Margo remained positive through the course of the project with builder and owner alike. I have spent years refining the process of generating scope of work documents to ensure specifications are met. I’m a bit embarrassed, and even more impressed, that the selections that MNI was responsible for specifying were accompanied by a matrix superior to any that I’d created. Even for more complex spec charts like paint and tile, I just clicked print and handed it to the guys – BOOM! A thousand fewer things on my list AND I’m removed from the liability of making an error as middleman in the translation from designer to spreadsheet. I almost cried tears of joy.. The level of organization in the provided details and specifications had an immensely positive impact on the project in terms of both efficiency and accuracy (and my own morale). We had a snafu late in the project due to a necessary electrical service upgrade which resulted in a move-in delay. MNI remained positive and successfully rescheduled their entire end-phase of the project (finishes/furniture deliveries, install dates, site visits, etc.) without complaint. MNI was receptive to alternatives in circumstances where choices would impact timeline and budget. Margo has a great personality and is a blast to work with. She was truly a part of the team. In the future, the only design firm I recommend will be MNI.”

“I have nothing but good things to say about Margo. It was the best decision I ever made on my remodel . . . and possibly in my life!Margo is an excellent designer. We live in a San Francisco Victorian with some old detail that we wanted to maintain. Margo has helped us with everything: bathrooms, kitchen, paint, mouldings and trims, lighting, and doors and windows. She's done a great job bringing in some contemporary elements to our older space, and keeping the great character of the house. She's done a great job helping us select colors, tile, fixtures, cabinets, and everything else. A whole-house remodel is one of the most stressful things you can put yourself through. There are tons of people to deal with and talk to, and Margo outshines them all in an industry where it seems like people are always withholding information or not giving you the whole picture. Our project is on hold right now during shelter-in-place. But she's continuing to help us via phone calls and email as we plan what to do next, even though most of the home construction and remodeling business is at a standstill. It's always reassuring to talk to her and know she's continuing to help. Margo is also just a great person. After working with her for a few years now, we've gotten to know her. She's caring and kind. She's the kind of person who wants to make the world more beautiful and is able to do that through her work. We've recommended her to several friends. And if you're reading this review -- you should absolutely reach out to her and hire her.”

“Margo is an excellent and diligent designer. She spent a lot of time and effort with us to understand our aesthetic, and then helped us do a very high quality remodel. She brings a good eye, attention to detail, and a healthy respect for a budget to the table. In addition she also managed our contractors, thereby removing a considerable load from us. In addition, she has lots of good recommendations for contractors of various kinds which really helped us during the process. We liked her so much we used her for a second, and much more extensive, remodel of another house. I cannot recommend her highly enough.”

“We worked with Margo to choose wallpaper, furnishings, paint and decorative touches for our new home, and she beyond delivered. I loved that our vision was aligned, not only with me, but with my spouse, whom I do not always share a combined love of the same interior designs and styles.  She was able to bridge our preferences gracefully.  She has a calming manner about her, and worked as quickly or as slowly as we needed to make our decisions.  I recommend her to my friends, and now to the broader community. “

“I highly recommend Margo! She's got cool, modern and fun design ideas for a wide range of styles, she really listens but also gently pushed me out of my comfort zone to try fun new designs, and she was attentive to practical considerations of family life. Margo is also a true professional, with excellent communication and follow-through. It is really a pleasure to work with her! “

“Margo is a very talented interior designer. She helped me and my family to decorate our minimalist modern home in Los Altos. Our home went from a cold white box to a place of love and warmth. She is creative. Always pushes us to think outside of the box and out of our comfort zone a bit. She makes great suggestions for different colors and materials that we wouldn't have thought of. She was also conscious of our budget and helped us to save money wherever we could. The end result is stunning and we love living in our new home very much. Communication with Margo is very smooth. She is always responsive and is always willing to help to offer candid and constructive opinion. She was a true partner in crime every step of the way, and we truly enjoy the design experience with her.”
